About the School

Faith in one’s own divine nature and the courage to live by such faith is the urgent need of the present student community right from preprimary level to University education. This alone can liberate them from the clutches of undue materialism, excessive consumerism and unprecedented media exploitation. Swami Vivekananda, the great icon of Indian youth and patriot par excellence strongly recommended this through his declarations that ‘Each soul is potentially divine’ and ‘Education is meant for manifestation of this perfection which is already within’. He called this education as Man-making education which takes care of the total personality of human being rather than just meeting the bread-winning requirements and survival. In various occasions Swami Vivekananda also declared that ‘renunciation and service’ are the core of the backbone of our great nation and if we strengthen India in these channels, every problem of India gets automatically resolved and the country takes its position of pristine glory. He also exhorted that India progresses well only when its masses are taken care of and only when social justice prevails.

Drawing inspiration from the prophetic teachings of Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Mission, Vijayawada is running a rural based Ramakrishna Mission High School offering classes from LKG to 10th standard at Sitanagaram Village, Tadepalli Mandal, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh meeting the educational needs of the children from Sitanagaram and surrounding 18 villages who are mostly from poor, under-privileged, backward and SC/ST communities.

Ramakrishna Mission is managing the school since 2001 with Government aid Telugu Medium instruction from class 6 to class 10. However, the Mission is managing the School since 2020, without Government aid, providing free education to these 200 students from the families belonging economically weaker section and who are very much below the poverty line. With earnest entreaties from local community, Ramakrishna Mission started simultaneously English Medium classes from LKG onwards from 2004 without Government aid and with bare minimum fees structure just to meet the school requirements without any commercial interests. The present strength of students is 1032, out of which the English Medium stream strength is 822 and that of Telugu Medium stream is 200. The school is offering co-education. Within a very short period of seven years, Ramakrishna Mission, with the support of public donations, built a school building, Vivekananda VidyaVihar with 30 spacious classrooms of best natural ventilation and lighting. The school building has three floors with wide verandas, broad stairs and adequate toilets. Gradually, the management equipped the school with highly qualified staff, an auditorium with audio-visual equipment to organize morning assemblies and student events, science laboratory, computer laboratory, English language laboratory, innovation laboratory, virtual class room, digital classes, library with good collection of books, fire-fighting equipment, R.O. water supply facility for drinking etc. The school has appointed faculty for Physical Education and maintains adequate stock of games and sports material for developing physical fitness of the students. Satisfied with the facilities and arrangements, the Government of Andhra Pradesh accorded Permanent Recognition to the school vide its order no. Recog. L.Dis. No. 1906/(B2) B5/2016; Dt: 27-03-2017. Staff Quarters were also built to accommodate limited staff members.

Morning Assembly from 8.30 am to 9.20 am is the most distinguishing feature of the school and provides various inputs to the students for Character Building, strong Value System, Patriotism, Service and concern to fellow students and society, Leadership Qualities, Devotional Singing and Practical Spirituality. Monks of Ramakrishna Mission themselves take the central stage of this daily assembly and infuse tremendous strength, purity and peace into the students every day. Throughout the year, many Monks of Ramakrishna Order invariably visit the Ashrama and School and inspire the students by strengthening their soft skills for achieving success in their lives and for excelling in all their endeavours. Motivational videos are also shown to the students from time to time. Teachers also involve actively to teach values to the students.

The school is following special Value Education Syllabus from LKG to X std. Monks of the Ramakrishna Mission take special classes to students on Value Education. All students of the school get’Ramakrishna Prabha’,the monthly telugu magazine of Ramakrishna order. To encourage students to go through the magazine and other moral books – Sri Ramakrishna- Vivekananda literature, monthly competitions are conducted based on these books and prizes are distributed.

Sri Krishna Ashtami, Ugadi, Christmas, Ramzan, Independence day, Republic day, National Youth Day etc. are celebrated in order to signify the importance of festivals and patriotism.

Over the years the school has established a credible Academic Record. The English Medium stream registered 100% pass results in 10th class Board Examinations for the last seven years. For the year 2017-18, 10 students got 10 out of 10 GPA and 17 other students scored 9.8 and 9.7 GPA. Compared to the total strength of the students appearing for Board Examination, this record exceeds the performance of many corporate schools in this regard.

The management is very keen on making the students feel proud that they are studying in a school with good facilities and they are not deprived of any advanced educational instruction technology due to their economic or social status. The school has converted its classrooms into Digital Classrooms and introduced multimedia instruction for the last couple of years. The students are taking full advantage of this pedagogy and it is one of the reasons for the excellent academic record of the students of late. As the school is situated in a village, Grid Power Supply interruptions are very common. To ensure uninterrupted running of Digital Classrooms and to ensure the School Teaching schedules with certainty, the management has equipped the school with Solar Power Supply system. With this arrangement, the Electricity bill of the school has reduced significantly and the school is diverting the saved amount for other good activities.

In spite of the best efforts of the teaching staff, the low level of the English language standard of the students is a matter of concern for the management, in the sense that they are losing some of their opportunities when they step out of the school. To remedy the situation, the management has introduced value addition to its existing teaching strategy. It identified suitable third party agencies to provide specially trained teaching instructors and technology based solutions to bring radical change in English Language standard of the students from LKG onwards. It introduced Multimedia based English Phonics Program for LKG, UKG and 1st standard students to improve their listening, speaking and reading abilities by adopting ‘fun learning methodology’. The school has started Communicative English classes from 3rd standard to 9th standard with the help of specially trained third party instructors. The school has established an English Language Laboratory (ELL) and adopted a special software to improve English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation with the help of English Language Usage Practice sessions from 1st standard to 9th standard. These efforts are going on for the last couple of years with positive emerging results in the form of ‘Parents’ Satisfaction.’

To expand the knowledge base of the students and to improve their confidence, the management has created a Virtual Classroom facility. With this facility the students without crossing the school boundaries are able to interact with eminent persons across the globe.

Apart from these, the management has undertaken many measures for the welfare of the students.

1. Medical screening of students: Students belonging to the families of below poverty line were made to undergo medical screening. Students suffering from malnutrition were identified. They are provided with nutritious food additions in the morning and evening every day to improve their general health and to improve their concentration on studies. Students with sight disorders are identified and they are helped to procure the corrective glasses with frames. Services were provided periodically from a Dermatologist and a homoeopathy physician to take care of their other disorders. Free uniforms are also distributed to the poor and deserving students.

2. Scholarships for Merit & Poor/Deserving Students: Every year the school awards Silver Medals to meritorious students in X Std. public examination. To encourage academic performance, the school is giving Scholarships and certificates for meritorious students of other standards. The school is also encouraging the students who are struggling and showing promising performance from the categories of average performers and low performers by giving suitable scholarships. For the Academic Year 2018-19, scholarships to the tune of Rs.6,58,650/- were given.

3. To encourage discipline among the students, a group of students from 6th, 7th and 8th and 9th standards are chosen on the basis of overall performance and Educational Tours to Chennai & nearby places are arranged.

4. Every year the Educational Tours to Belur Math and other places associated with Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Holy Mother Sri Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda are arranged for 10th class students. The students are cherishing this visit for their life-long memory and inspiration.

5. Service Activities: The students are encouraged to undertake service activities which will help them to build the spirit of cooperation and the feeling of oneness with others. Students are participating in service activities in the events like Krishna Pushkarams and extending their voluntary services in major school events.

6. Science Exhibitions: Students are encouraged to build models and exhibit and present their models to general public every year to improve their scientific talent and presentation skills.

7. Special encouragement to Telugu Medium Stream students: Telugu Medium stream is covered under Government Aid and as such they are covered under Mid-day Meal Scheme. Apart from this, uniforms, books and stationery are distributed free of cost to deserving students. To improve their academic standards, special coaching classes are also arranged for them after school hours.

8. A Students’ Home was built in 2009 for housing the deserving poor boys.

Vivekananda Vidya Vihar

Ramakrishna Mission built this Green Building in the year 2008 with the generous donations received from the public. It has unique architecture that provides plenty of natural light and ventilation. It is a three-storey building consists of 30 spacious classrooms with multimedia instruction infrastructure, office cum reception, library, science laboratory, virtual classroom, English language laboratory and Digital classrooms. A server based local area network connects all the classrooms to facilitate easy installation of required educational software. It is supported by a 30 Kilowatt Solar Power Supply system with battery back-up facility. Its power consumption through grid-power supply is almost negligible. It is protected by fire-fighting equipment as per the standard norms. It has very wide stairs and verandas. It also has very spacious separate toilets for students and staff in each floor. The building also has R.O. water supply plant that supplies safe drinking water for the entire student community.

On the way from the main gate to the entrance of the building, a nicely carved red sandstone majestic statue of Divine Mother Saraswati Devi was installed and unveiled on 15th August 2014.

Besides housing Ramakrishna Mission High School, Vivekananda Vidya Vihar also serves as a youth welfare centre to train rural youth in various ways by conducting seminars on different themes, conducting youth and teachers’ conventions, conducting competitions on Ramakrishna – Vivekananda literature for school and college students, etc.

This Vivekananda Vidya Vihar Green Building is literally a boon for the children and youth of Sitanagaram and surrounding villages in particular and to the student community of Andhra Pradesh in general. Deriving inspiration from the ideals of renunciation and service given by Swami Vivekananda and supported by the worldwide, non-political, non-sectarian and spiritual organization, viz., Ramakrishna Mission, this building is acting as an eternal fountain liberally spreading character-building and man-making principles without any distinction of caste, religion or race seeing living God in every human being.
